Reflection
I chose to do my content knowledge project on the use of Propaganda in the United States during World War II. My projects gives information about the different ways propaganda was used and how propaganda persuaded the American people to join the war effort. After completing this project, I feel as if I was able to demonstarte my knowledge effectively for future readers of this content. I explained how the media exposed differet types of propaganda, how racism was a theme of propaganda, and how the Office of War Information was involved in the use of propaganda. I wanted the reader to know that propaganda was a huge part of the war and was the reason that women joined the workforce and that people were able to work together and suport the war on the homefront.
These are some of the NC essential standards that were addressed in this work
USH2.H.4 Analyze how conflict and compromise have shaped politics, economics and culture in the United States.
USH2.H.6.2 Explain the reasons for United States involvement in global wars and the influence each involvement had on international affairs (e.g., Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, Cold War, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraqi War, etc.).
5.H.1 Analyze the chronology of key events in the United States.
WH.H.7.3 Analyze economic and political rivalries, ethnic and regional conflicts, and nationalism and imperialism as underlying causes of war (e.g., WWI, Russian Revolution, WWII).
It is important for students to understand how important American support during World War II was and how the country went about seeking support. These posters, movies, and radio stations were very popular in trying to support the war effort and create images that would affect the people emotionally. Propaganda was used to show the people how the war was affecting our country and how our lives were being changed since the attack on Pearl Harbor. Students need to realize that commercials and television were not the only way to support effort on the war like we do today. They also need to understand what many of the propaganda posters were talking about and how they affected the lived of the Americans and of our enemies. We used propaganda as a defense mechanism and as threats to other countries. World War II has affected this country on many levels and I want students to see how the country came together to support this war and just how important it was.
As a social studies teacher, I want my students to be able to learn about the important things that have happened in the past. I do not want them to see just a broad overview of the war but an in depth look at how we supported the war and how the war affected our country and our people.Having students be able to look at these different types of propaganda and learn the meaning behind each one will give them more meaningful learning and they will be able to understand the content in a more meaningful and effective way. When teaching this content in my classroom I want to be able to make it engaging for students and have them be creative. I want them to creative their own type of propaganda not just for World War II but it could be for anything. I want them to learn how to persuade their peers by creating a video, cartoon, and even a poster. There is so much I could do with propaganda in my future classroom and have my students connect propaganda to their lives and use it to persuade others of something they believe in. I would use the photos and videos to question and assess their knowledge and to create higher level thinking. I would ask them what they thought each poster or video was talking about and how it persuaded the reader or what was the theme of the piece of propaganda. This project really made me aware of how our country came together to support each other in a time of crisis. I never knew that Walt Disney and Dr. Seuss were involved in the creating of propaganda during the war and I found that to be very interesting and I believe my future students would find that to be interesting as well. Overall, I learned how to take a piece of content and to create it into something meaningful and engaging for my future students and learned how to teach in a whole new dynamic.
